Аннотация Purpose: to study economic practices of freelancers in social network VKontakte, to identify their motivation, forms of economic practices in social networks, challenges young people are faced with, strategies for the implementation of economic activity through social networks, specific nature of economic practices of young people, importance of intellectual assets for young people who use the potential of the digital economy to their own benefit. Methodology/Approach: the authors describe the adaptation process as the main mechanism that is used by freelancers in social networks for income generation. Adaptation is the basis for development of “soft&hard skills” – skills that are required for the efficient employment of people in the contemporary labor market (efficiency is treated as income maximization, correlation of income and labor costs). In social-labor relationships, people are forced to mobilize all their efforts in complex and critical situations, ensuring the maximum use of adaptive resources. The actor, in pursuit of a certain goal, is forced to adapt to the external environment in the context of the existing social hierarchy of interrelations of values, institutional orders and norms. Understanding the essence of adaptation requires a specific analysis of its achievability. Results: it has been found that the activity in social networks allows securing additional earnings, developing helpful skills, and fulfilling oneself. As a matter of fact, freelancers have the opportunity to maintain their own “insurance” from unexpected social and economic changes in society, they make their future more positive and. The following types of economic activity of young people in social networks were identified: according to the form of employment; according to the amount of proceeds; according to hours of employment; according to types of works; the underlying motives have been identified and the economic practices have been described. Conclusions: today, freelancers in social networks upgrade their professional skills, acquire and hone their digital skills (“soft&hard skills”), carry out flexible, adaptive economic activity, are constantly learning, using and creating new technologies. Being self-organized and in most cases self-employed, freelancers demonstrate the viewpoint which is independent of any state and public institutions (hence the viewpoint which is reflective of reality), shape the modern paradigm of study and development of necessary sets of digital skills for the successful formation of the digital economy in contemporary Russia.
