Students of the Volzhsky branch of VolSU are creating an air quality monitoring system

Students of the Volzhsky branch of VolSU are creating an air quality monitoring system_01.jpgA team of students from the Volzhsky branch of Volgograd State University is developing a public air quality monitoring system called "Air Peers".

The system will exist and develop through the involvement of environmental community activists, students and employees of educational institutions, as well as monitoring services of the city in the installation and connection of mini air quality monitoring stations to a global network. The network of mini monitoring stations will transmit data on temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, and the concentration of fine suspended particles PM10 and PM2.5 in the air to the server and then to an online map and various mobile apps, all this almost in real time (every 2.5 minutes).

"The created network of mini air quality monitoring stations will unite the project participants, they will become "air peers", who will be interested in watching the data coming not only from the station installed outside the window in their educational institution or apartment, but also the neighboring stations to assess the adequacy of data and factors affecting the changes in the measured indicators," Kristina Chekulova, student of the Volzhsky branch of VolSU, the project manager.

In the near future it is planned to hold workshops on how to assemble and install mini stations, as well as their installation in the educational institutions of Volzhsky.

Besides Kristina, the team includes students Maxim Skripnikov, Arina Orlova, Mark Efendiev and Vyacheslav Vyazminov. The mentors of the project are Dr. Anna Kochetkova, Associate Professor of the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences of the Volzhsky branch, and Olga Obyedkova, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences of the Volzhsky branch, researcher of the integrated laboratory for environmental pollution monitoring of Volgograd Center for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring - a branch of North Caucasus Department for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring.

The "Air Peers" project is implemented within the grant of the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs (Rosmolodezh).
